25 year-old Guillermo Sebastian Coria is known by many names. He is "El Mago" (the magician) for his deft touch, uncanny shot repertoire, and ability to take a dramatically defensive position and transform it into a winning response. He is "Guille" (gee-jay) when he makes you laugh with his antics and the unbelieveable results of his magic touch. He is "Bugs Bunny" when he runs like a screwy rabbit to perform the perfect passing shot. And he is "King Coria" when his feet are on the red dirt of a clay tennis court. That is the surface where the power of brawn and might is conquered by the power of an astute mind and master artistry. And that's where Guille is at his crafty best.
By only 23 years of age, he had already achieved immense honors on every playing surface.

In 2003, he began a year-long winning streak on clay with 5 straight tournament wins and an astounding 22-1 match record. In 2004, he was one of only three players on tour (with Roddick and Federer) to make the finals in tournaments on all three surfaces: clay, grass, and hard court. |
In 2005, he was one of only three players (with Federer and Nalbandian) to make the R16 in ALL FOUR Grand Slam events: the Australian, the French, Wimbledon, and the US Open where he made the QF for the second year in a row he played.
Then there was a large hiccup in the road on the path to glory beginning in 2006, a transitional time of elusive and often mysterious happenings, which saw King Coria fall from #8 in the world out of the top 100. And then off the tour for an entire year with injuries and uncertainty.
But as magic is a mystery, there's no doubt Guille will solve the riddle, and that rise back to the Clay Throne will be just part of the brilliant career story for a true tennis artist, El Mago.
Ranked in the year-end top ten for 3 consecutive years (2002-2005), El Mago is a unique character in the otherwise all-too-similar world of professional tennis. Coria has dimension, Coria has feel, Coria has a temper.
